Surviving: the basics
Your torch is a beacon. It lets you see, and it lets him see you. Turn it off (F) when you hear him close and let the streetlights do the work.
Listen. You hear the Butcher's heavy boots before you see him, and your heartbeat speeds up as he gets closer. If the heartbeat starts, stop and think before you run, because running is loud.
Running makes noise and leaves footprints that only he and his minions can see. Walking is quiet. Sprint only when he's already chasing you or the gap is worth it.
Vault to break a chase. Fences and windows can be vaulted with Space. He's slower over them, so a garden with two fences can buy you the seconds you need.
Hiding
Wardrobes, beds, bins, skips, the phone box and more can be hidden in with E. Inside, you can't be seen. But he can search a spot, and if he's standing right next to you, hold Space to hold your breath or he'll hear you. Your breath runs out, so don't hide where he's already looking.
When he's close, pressing E beside a bin tips it over instead of hiding you in it. If it lands in his path he stumbles for a moment.
Fuses and the gate
Three fuses are hidden around the village. They glint now and then in the dark. Carry them to the fuse box beside the iron gate at the east end of the main street. When all three are in, the gate opens and anyone who gets through it has escaped. If nobody manages it, everyone still alive when the sun comes up survives.
Items
- Camera. A flash in his face blinds him for a moment. Aim carefully; it takes time to charge again.
- Firecrackers. Throw them to make a racket somewhere else. He'll go and look.
- Flare. Lights up an area for a while. Good for searching for fuses, bad if he's watching.
Getting hurt
The first hit wounds you and gives you a short burst of speed: use it to get away. A wounded survivor leaves a trail of drops. A teammate can heal you by standing next to you and holding E. A second hit and you're caught, and you come back as a minion for the rest of the round.
Playing the Butcher
You start blind. For the first fifteen seconds you can't move or see. Use it to think about where they'll go: houses, the churchyard, the playground.
You see differently. The Butcher sees further in the dark but without colour. Torches stand out; a survivor who turns theirs off is much harder to spot.
Lunge with Space or a click. A lunge covers ground fast but leaves you open for a moment if you miss.
Search hiding spots with E, and walk into doors to break them down. Searching takes time, so search where the footprints end, not every wardrobe you pass.
Guard the fuse box late on. Once two fuses are in, they have to come to you.
Use your minions. Caught survivors become minions who can't hurt anyone but screech when they find someone, telling you where to go.
The lights go out
As the night goes on, streetlights die one by one, everywhere at the same time for everyone. The last minutes are much darker than the first.
